Brean Swim School Course Breakdown1. Parent & Child Session (4 months to 4 years). This session is aimed at introducing adults with babies or very young children (4 months to 4 years) to water in an informal manner. The session will have its own private area of the pool and is strictly kept to this age group so that parents and babies or toddlers can gain water confidence and learn how to enjoy the water without older more boisterous pool users. Subject to availability, there will be a qualified swimming teacher on hand to give advice to parents so they can enhance their children’s learning through correct handling of children and use of fun and games. This helps children learn vital life swimming skills and to be safe in the water. All equipment floats, toys etc… will be provided by the pool, however if you would like to bring your own please feel free to do so. The parent and baby session forms the first step of the Brean Swim School learn to swim programme and also forms part of the asa’s foundation stage of long term athlete development. Cost £4.99 for 60 minute session – under 4’s free. Maximum of 2 children to one adult. 2. Parent & Toddler Lessons (2 years 6 months old to 5 years) These lessons are a more formal way for the parent to learn how to promote learning to swim and for the child to learn how to swim and be safe in the water. During these lessons parents enter the water with the child providing the necessary support or encouragement to the child. The aim of the lesson is to introduce the child to a lesson format and teach basic swimming techniques and skills. These lessons have a heavy base of games so that the child learns to swim without knowing it! The children will have the opportunity to work towards the asa’s (National Governing Body for swimming in England) adult and child award scheme, The Duckling Awards, but do not necessarily need to pass these to continue to move onto the next step. Cost £4.80 per lesson but a full course must be paid for up front. Contact us for term dates and lengths. 3. Infant/Junior Lessons (After school Mon to Fri / 5 years+) During these lessons the children enter the water by themselves and work towards achieving the asa’s (National Governing Body for swimming in England) National Plan for the Teaching of Swimming award scheme. Divided into seven levels the lessons are organised by ability and children must achieve each level before moving up to the next class. There may still be a heavy reliance on games to promote learning without the children realising it in the early stages and always an emphasis on making lessons as fun as possible. If you are unsure of your child’s ability, we will be happy to conduct a free assessment to All swimmers are continuously assessed and certificates & badges can be purchased when achieved. Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Stage 4 Stage 5 Stage 6 Stage 7 After Stage 7 You and your child can make the decision of enrolling into a swimming club, a rookie lifeguard course, or even both!! Feel free to ask you child’s swimming teacher what he/she thinks may be best. Cost £4.80 per lesson but a full course must be paid for up front. Contact us for term dates and lengths. 4. Advanced Aquatics for Junior’s (Stages 8, 9, 10) and beyond. Currently we offer one option the Rookie Lifeguard. Designed by the Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS) in conjunction with the asa so there is a seamless transition from learning swimming and aquatic skills to becoming a Rookie Lifeguard. The programme is divided into 3 stages - Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each stage is then subdivided into 3 modules. You must be able to swim 100 metres, be confident in deep water and be able to submerge fully and tread water. Courses are run depending on numbers please register interest at reception. Brean Swim School will be offering further options in the future, such as mini polo, aqua fun, and swim fit, so look out for promotions in the near future.
